Older and wiser

I have had many blessings visiting with the elderly. I have found them to be full of wisdom, with so many exciting stories of their youth. I found a story written by Vernice Schepp. It goes like this:

They're not just old people, you know. They are life at its finish, a book in its last chapter. They were babies born small, new and fresh; they grew and learned, loved and laughed; they made mistakes and cried as you and I. Life taught them much--they are packed with memories and knowledge we can't know.

Here they are--they look back with happy thoughts, but sometimes sad that it's all over, why wasn't it different or why can't we do it again? Be gentle now and listen, they have much to say. Time cries out and marches on. They're not just old people--learn from them, understand them and help them fill their numbered days with love and warmth; they need you! They are fragile gems, polished by life and time. They're not just old people. They are us tomorrow. We are them yesterday.

I think it is very fitting to our elderly. Older people are great blessing if you will just give them the chance. It means so much just to stop and say hello, just to talk a little time out of your day for them. Remember that one day we will be them. The bible tells us in Pr 20:29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head. Old age teaches that life is not doing things, even great things for God. Life is not activity and good looks. Life is not a Bell curve, but a continuous climb toward heaven. One old person put it, "They say we are going downhill, but they have it wrong. It is uphill. That's why it is such hard work!" Old age can be thought of as the last step before seeing God. If you have not spent some time with one of these great blessings of information, I would encourage you to do so. You may be missing out on more than you think. Be a blessing to an older person this week. Give them the time that one-day you hope someone will return to you. God bless you today is my prayer.
